Excitement was in the air when Place’s Discount Center opened for business in 1983 at Gallatin, MO, after remodeling the former Gallatin Motor Company at 212 North Main Street.

The grand opening of the large discount retail store called Place’s included a ribbon cutting ceremony involving Gallatin Mayor Tom Gallagher, right, with store manager Mike Wiley and other Place’s employees.

The grand opening ceremonies included comments from State Rep. Phil Tate during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Store manager Mike Wiley spoke on behalf of the family-owned retail business and employees.

After Place’s Discount Center, the business building was purchased by Shopko, a large retail chain of stores with main offices in Wisconsin. A wide variety of clothing and household products were offered when this photo was taken in 2019, with Gallatin’s only pharmacy located here after the closure of the Davis Drug Company.

Family Dollar and Dollar Tree discount retailing businesses began doing business at 212 North Main Street in Gallatin, MO, after the Shopko chain took bankruptcy nationwide and closed its Gallatin store. A wide variety of home products, clothing, and grocery store food items were offered for sale here. Since this business did not include a pharmacy, Gallatin soon welcomed a new business, Main Street Pharmacy, into its business community. (2022 photo)
