SIR: I wish to state through the columns of your invaluable paper, that two brave Daviess county boys are no more. On the 28th ult. corporal James C. Netherton and five others of Co. A, 1st Cav., M.S.M. were sent from camp at Hickman’s Mills, Jackson county Mo, to procure a beef. The place at which they expected to get the provision, was about two miles from camp, when they got there the man of the house was not at home, and the boys dismounted to await bis return. They had not been there long when two men made their appearance on an adjoining hill, the boys remounted their horses and started towards them to find out who they were, they ran and the boys knew they were bushwhackers, the boys pursued them to a house where about twenty other guerrillas were concealed, when they discovered the vast odds they would have to contend with, they retreated, but two of them, Wm. A. Gray and Eleazer Johnson being poorly mounted were overtaken and inhumanly murdered. They were good and brave and had served their country faithfully for three years; they had been in many a skirmish and battle where the missiles of death flew fast and thick, they had escaped unscratched till their term of service had very nearly expired, and about the time they were again to be restored to home and friends and in a time of comparative quiet. They were overpowered and murdered. They have a large, number of friends to mourn their untimely. Their comrades in arms will miss them from their circle and although they are sleeping the sleep of death in bloody graves they will still continue to live in the memory of their comrades. They commanded the esteem of both officers and the men of their company and regiment.
