USN Capt. John Frederick Baumgardner, a native of Coffey, MO, achieved a well-decorated 30-year naval career including command of six ships in the Pacific and saw extensive combat action.

Capt. Baumgardner received the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with “V”, National Defense Service Medal with star, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation with star, Meritorious Service Medal, various combat actions awards including Vietnam Service Medal with 13 stars.

Baumgardner was born on Jan. 29, 1932, to Dr. Paul and Bobby (Pugh) Baumgardner in Coffey, MO. He graduated from Coffey High School in 1950, and then from the University of Missouri. After retirement from his military career, he taught and served as dean of Central Texas College, a community college located in Copperas Cove, TX.

John Frederick Baumgardner, Captain USN (ret), died on Dec. 8, 2017, in Virginia Beach, VA.  A memorial service with full military honors for Capt. Baumgardner was held at Horton Veteran’s Cemetery in Suffolk, VA. John was survived by his wife Sheila, his children Rick, Bobbi Ann and John Michael, sister Beverly Ward and brother Paul Baumgardner.
