One of the earliest settlers of Daviess County, MO, was James McMahan, a Methodist preacher who held the first religious services in the county on Aug. 25, 1830. This service was held under an oak tree. Worship services were held in settlers’ homes until 1839 when the first Methodist Church was constructed at a cost of $1,500. To meet the needs of a growing congregation, the membership in 1886 replaced the first building with a new one at a cost of $3,500. The cornerstone of the present building was laid in 1912. The building was completed for worship in 1913 at a cost of $35,000. The Gallatin United Methodist Church is located at 111 South Market Street, just one block south of the business square. — taken from the 1980 church directory of the Gallatin United Methodist Church
